We are what we eat. And somehow, we have become disconnected from that. I know I have from time to time and had a reawakening (if you like) of that recently.
My body has been crying out for nutrition and I just wasn’t listening. I justified my diet to myself saying that it was “pretty good” and that I don’t eat a lot of processed foods. But the truth was that my diet had been slipping for a while and recently my body told me in no uncertain terms that it was time for a change.
So, as I have done many times over the 30 plus years I have been on a “wellness Journey” and prioritising my health, I made an immediate change to my diet to get me back on track.
By eating 95% fresh fruits and vegetables I’ve been able to have a big impact on my health in a very short space of time while enjoying the process.
That’s the key for me and for many people I think…. Is to be able to enjoy your food while on what a lot of people would consider a restrictive diet. The meals and sweet treats I have been making with are soooo delicious, I’m enjoying my food more than ever.
I must say that I am very lucky though, because I have been meditating for as long as I have been healing, the meditation allows the body to have an immediate and physical response to my health when it is needed. My body just responds now.
On hearing the fact that my body needed better nutrition and fast, I was easily able to go cold turkey on coffee x3 per day, daily chocolate treats, and many other addictive food habits.
Now when I see that foods that I would never be able to walk past I don’t see them as food. My body knows that those things aren’t nourishment and my eyes don’t see food they just see things that I used to like. There is no willpower involved, no mental struggle. If it’s not nourishing, the body simply isn’t interested.
If anyone would like me to post any ideas for food substitutes or recipe ideas let me know in the comments. I must admit my recipes are more ideas that I throw together rather than carefully measured out concoctions but if you are a fairly confident cook they will be easy to follow or may just inspire ideas of your own.
But really what I wanted to express to today is that if we are what we eat do you want your cells to be made up of vitamins and minerals that are grown in the earth that are beautiful and colourful or do you want them to be made up of the chemicals that are made in a factory and come in a box?
Nature has designed our eyes to be drawn to the beautiful colours and textures of fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, seeds and so on not the white powders and dead brown things that come in a box.
Here is a way you can test this out for yourself. The next time you empty your weekly shop onto the kitchen bench sort everything that grows naturally in one pile and everything that comes in a box or a packet on the other side.
Which one looks more appetising? The ones in the box might look good because the box looks good. Marketers put a lot of effort into tricky your eyes to believing there is nutrition on there but if you remove the box what do you see.
Would you like your insides and outsides to look like the plump bright food that grow in the earth or the dead brown and white things that come from a box. Which one supports life? And which one is entertainment for your mouth?
To feel truly nourished is something that I have been missing and I find that even with my decades of experience it’s easily overlooked from time to time.
Don’t get me wrong there is still a place for frozen and canned foods and supplements as well but without mostly fresh produce, my body at least is far less healthy and vital and can quickly decline into illness.
That is enough of my post growers market shop ramblings for today,
my body is telling me it is time to eat 😊
Thanks for the refreshing post and it’s true about the boxes. I never thought about it till reading your article and makes totally sense you feel more nourished when you’re looking at fresh food.
What meditation you‘re practicing?
I‘d like it if you’d share some recipe
Thanks again for the reminder about choosing food
